Chris and I have downsized to live in an affordable home. It is a two bedroom, one bathroom unit and we love it. It is large enough to be comfortable, but small enough to keep clean and feel cosy. We are content.
Hearing that we had downsized to save on rent, the couple, who had a two storey, four bedroom, two and a half bathrooms with no children, commented that our modest abode was quite large enough for two people. Chris and I almost burst out laughing! So much swaggering amuses us and it was just like they were saying "it's good enough for you! "

Without God in one's life, posturing and swaggering helps fill the void that He should fill in our hearts, thoughts and lives. Materialism is endless and breeds discontent in the end. One can never have enough material possessions. We have learned that contentment comes from within, not without.
Our home is adequate for us, our car will suffice even though it is getting quite old. It still gets us around. We are happy with enough money to pay the gas bill and rent and put food on the table. Sure we would love to be blessed so that we could do more, but we are thankful for what we have. We have something that those people will never have: contentment and tact and the love of a Saviour Who always gives us our daily bread.

Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 1 Philippians 4:11
I clicked on your link from the Wise Woman Linkup. My husband and I will also be moving into a smaller space soon and right now trying to decide what to keep and what to take with us. Who knew you could accumulate so much junk in 22 years of marriage! But I am looking forward to it so I don't have the kids to clean up after and the junk to clean!! God bless you, Steph
ReplyDeleteTrue how we don't think we have much until we move! Bless you in your move!
DeleteHow true, "Materialism is endless and breeds discontent in the end." Always wanting more, never feeling satisfied, that is the discontentment that comes when you look to the world to satisfy you. Only God can give us satisfaction and bring contentment to our hearts. And learning that lesson takes a long time! Thanks for sharing this. We are trying to downsize too!
ReplyDeleteWe are downsizing also and it is a challenge. Materialism does breed discontent. Only the Lord can satisfy our hearts! Thank you for sharing this post!
ReplyDeleteYes, Cheryl, I think a lot of people try to replace God in that vacuum in the heart where He should reside, by adding things. Money would be nice to pay the gas bill etc, but it can become one's god. Things can't replace a relationship that satisfies the soul. Hopefully, people will come to see that before it's too late to make that one crucial decision- to know Jesus as LORD and Saviour and Filler of the hungry heart. Thanks for taking tea with me today, Cheryl. Blessings and comfort, Glenys
